The region consists of Ilfov County and the city of Bucharest. It is embedded, like an island, in the structurally weak planning region of southern Romania, but is economically by far the strongest region in Romania.
The gross domestic product is 168% of the EU average and, at EUR 24,200 per capita, almost two and a half times higher than the average GDP in Romania.
In contrast to Romania as a whole, which has seen a population decline (emigration) of 4.88% from 2011 to 2021, the Bucharest-Ilfov region is the only one in Romania with in-migration (+2.19%).
Urbanisation is 88.0 % and is the highest in Romania.
It is by far the economically strongest region. However, due to the high prices for investments, we recommend Northwest Romania or West Romania.
