The region consists of the six Romanian counties of Bacău, Botoșani, Iași, Neamț, Suceava and Vaslui. It covers the north-eastern part of the country and is located on the external border with Moldova and Ukraine. Well-known cities in this region include Bacău, Botoșani, Iași and Suceava.
The gross domestic product is 50% of the EU average and the lowest GDP in Romania at EUR 6,600 per capita.
In contrast to Romania as a whole, which has a population decline (emigration) of 4.88 % from 2011 to 2021, this is slightly higher than the national trend in Northeast Romania, at 4.59 %.
Urbanisation is 42 %, one of the lowest in Romania.
