The region consists of the six Romanian counties of Bihor, Bistrița-Năsăud, Cluj, Maramureș, Satu Mare and Sălaj. It covers the northwestern part of the country and is located on the external border with Hungary and Ukraine. Well-known cities in this region include Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Satu Mare, Baia Mare and Zalău.
The gross domestic product is 64% of the EU average and, at EUR 9,800 per capita, is one of the highest GDPs in Romania.
In contrast to Romania as a whole, which has a population decline (emigration) of 4.88 % from 2011 to 2021, this is far better than the national trend in Northwest Romania, at 2.52 %.
Urbanisation is 52.1%, which is about the same as the Romanian average.
Northwest Romania is an economically strong region whose development we also see as positive in the coming years.
