The region consists of the five Romanian counties of Dolj, Gorj, Mehedinți, Olt and Vâlcea. It covers the south-western part of the country and is located on the external border with Serbia and Bulgaria. Among the well-known cities in this region are Craiova and Târgu Jiu.
The GDP is 54% of the EU average and one of the lowest in Romania, at EUR 7,900 per capita.
In contrast to Romania as a whole, which has a population decline (emigration) of 4.88% from 2011 to 2021, this is much worse than the national trend in Southwest Romania, at 9.73%.
Urbanisation is 45.4%, well below the Romanian average.
Southwest Romania is an economically very weak region for which we cannot give a recommendation.
