The region consists of the four Romanian counties of Arad, Caraș-Severin, Hunedoara and Timiș. It covers the western part of the country and is located on the external border with Hungary and Serbia. Well-known cities in this region include Arad and Timișoara (German: Temeschwar).
The GDP is 71% of the EU average and one of the highest in Romania, at EUR 10,800 per capita.
In contrast to Romania as a whole, which has a population decline (emigration) of 4.88 % from 2011 to 2021, this is slightly better than the national trend in western Romania at 4.01 %.
Urbanisation is 53.6 %, which is roughly in line with the Romanian average.
Western Romania is an economically strong region whose development we also see as positive in the coming years.
