From the Danube delta to the plains of Wallachia and the high mountains of the Carpathians, Romania is a country with a very varied landscape and its geographical regions all have their own charm.
But Romania also has a lot to offer in terms of history. On these pages we present some historical and geographical regions.
The Munții Apuseni (Apuseni Mountains) in the Romanian Western Carpathians are part of the mighty Carpathian Arc enclosing Transylvania.
The Apuseni Nature Park was established in the Apuseni Mountains in 1990. It covers an area of about 75,000 hectares and is located in the central-eastern part of the Apuseni Mountains. In 2000, it was declared a nature reserve. The park, which lies in the counties of Alba, Cluj and Bihor, is divided into areas with flora and fauna that are particularly worthy of protection.
Hundreds of caves, gorges, mountain ridges and waterfalls await you, and besides bears, wolves, lynxes and eagles, the Apuseni Nature Park, established in this part of the Carpathians, provides an almost untouched habitat for many protected species.
It is mainly located in the counties of Alba, Arad, Bihor, Cluj and Hunedoara and in the economically strong planning regions of Western Romania and Northwestern Romania.

The Crișana area is a historical region in northwestern Romania.
It owes its name to the river Criș, whose tributaries Crișul Repede, Crișul Negru and Crișul Alb flow westwards from Romania and join in Hungary to form the Criș (Hungarian: Körös).
It is a historical landscape in eastern Hungary and western Romania that originally belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary but fell to the Principality of Transylvania in 1526, together with the Sathmar region and parts of Banat.
The Crișana region borders the Mureș River in the south and the Apuseni Mountains in the east. The largest cities on the Romanian side are Arad and Oradea.
It is mainly located in the counties of Arad and Bihor and in the economically strong planning regions of Western Romania and Northwestern Romania.

The historical region of Transylvania) lies in the heart of Romania.
In the 12th century, the Transylvanian Saxons settled there. They were German settlers who were granted extensive special rights by the Hungarian king and thus induced to resettle. The majority came from the Middle Rhine and Moselle Franconian regions and, due to poor living conditions and famine, gladly settled in uncultivated Transylvania.
The Transylvanian Saxons cultivated the land, practised agriculture, trade and established craft guilds. Over the centuries, they expanded northwards and eastwards, creating flourishing cities such as Sibiu, Brasov, Alba Iulia and Cluj-Napoca. Today, the Transylvanian Saxons form only a small, German-speaking minority in Transylvania.
Transylvania is mainly located in the counties of Alba, Bistrița-Năsăud, Brașov, Covasna, Cluj, Harghita, Hunedoara, Mureș, Sibiu and in the economically strong planning region of Central Romania.

The Romanian Western Carpathians are part of the mighty Carpathian Arc that encloses Transylvania.
Also called the Western Mountains, the Romanian Western Carpathians are a hilly landscape that also reaches heights of up to 1849 m (Cucurbăta Mare) in its centre (Bihor Mountains).
The Western Romanian Carpathians consist of the Apuseni Mountains (also Transylvanian Western Carpathians), the Poiana Ruscă Mountains and the Banat Mountains.
The charm of this dreamlike landscape lies in its diversity. You can find rugged limestone reefs as well as gentle ridges and high peaks. Above all, however, you will find hundreds of caves in the limestone, many beautiful waterfalls and an incredible diversity of species even outside the Apuseni Nature Park.
They are mainly located in the counties of Alba, Arad, Bihor, Caraș-Severin, Cluj, Hunedoara and Timiș and in the economically strong planning regions of Western Romania and Northwestern Romania.
